Abavas Rumba ****
SECOND WIDEST AND SECOND MOST POPULAR WATERFALL IN LATVIA
Height: There is no consensus about the height of this
fall. Some say - only 0,5 m, but at the same time over the distance of
7 m the total height is 1,1 m. Others have found that it is 2 m high.
Width: 30 - 35 m - this is considered to be the second
widest fall in Latvia
River: Abava
Location: Talsi district, Sabile region, Abava River
some 4 km below the Sabile bridge (the bridge is in the centre of city)
Availability: Very simple, there are easily visible signs
at the sides of the Sabile - Kuldiga road, asphalted access road.
Description: I have experienced that some foreigners
are frustrated when they see this semiofficially announced “second
biggest waterfall in Latvia”. This is not the fault of Abavas Rumba
- this natural monument is beautiful. This is rather problem in perception
of term “waterfall” in different cultures. In most countries
“waterfall” should look quite different.
Abavas Rumba is like magnificent rapids - water-rich Abava flows over
oblique dolostone step. For decades here is popular camp of water tourists,
here take place different events. At the beginning of 1990ties it seemed
as if the unorganised tourism would kill the beauty of this place. Happily
the owner of the land was able to make it attractive again.
It is unusually few people around the falls in winter. The water level is high and instead of falls
only small step is seen. November 2000 (44 kB)
In summer there is less water. Then it is seen that the water falls over small dolostone steps. June
2002. (57 kB)
Near the falls take place different events - during the warm season here always are people.
