David's Mill waterfalls ****
BRIGHT ORANGE COLOURED WATERFALLS
Height: Generally it is said that the height of these
falls is 7 m. This could be the total height of falls, falling over
the
rounded stones (something like rapids) nearer to the mill. The height
of the falls over dolostone is some 1,6 m.
Width: Powerful springs run out in some 70 m wide area,
but this could not be considered as a total width of waterfall. The
fall
over dolostone is around 1 m wide.
River: David's Mill springs, which are falling into Vaive
River.
Location: Cesis district, Gauja National Park, Vaive
municipality, near Vaive, on the steep left bank of Vaive River.
Accessibility: Easily accessible are the falls over
stones. In David's Mill is located study camp of Agriculture University
- seems,
they have got plans to renovate the mill. There is smaller road leading
to the mill from Riga - Aluksne road - but it is not easy to notice
this road. I always miss it...
It is much more complicated to reach the waterfall over dolostone - there
is no tourist route. Stubborn visitor on the way easily can stain his
dress with the bright sludge from the swampy springs - on the way you
can sink in the mud quite deep. It is nearly impossible to get the color
out from dress - and you will damage monument of nature. Better avoid
going there.
Description: There are pouring out numerous powerful
springs near David's Mill on the bank of Vaive River. Their water contains
much iron and lime salts - this makes the small streams and waterfalls
bright orange. It is possible that the stones, forming the waterfalls,
have been brought here for building the mill. But the waterfall over
dolostone definitely is natural.
These are not the biggest Latvian waterfalls - but some of the most unusual.
