behind the falling water, along the cliff. Do not do this at high water!!!

Narva waterfall
Height: 6,5 m
Width: ?
River: Narva
Location: Ida-Viru district, Narva, both sides of Krenholm
island. Small part of the waterfall is located in Russia
Description: It is heard that Jagala waterfall is called "Nagara
of Estonia"... It is quite possible that Narva waterfall deserves this
title even more, if it would be flowing.
Narva - in vepsi (indigenous nation here) language means - waterfall. There
were flowing 400 m3 of water per second in Narva waterfall before the building
of hydropowerplant dam. For comparison in Niagara waterfall there are flowing
- 5 830 m3 per second.
Since 1955 the water has been diverted to the Narva hydropowerplant. Still smaller
amounts of water are flowing through the waterfall sometimes.
Agreeent between Estonia and Russia envisages that Estonia can use one third
of the water flow in Narva river. The municipality of Narva is considering the
possibility to let part of water in former bed. Thus would be created very interesting
attraction for tourists. here should be taken into account the interests of
inhabitants in nearby Ivangorod (Russian side) - even comparatively small water
flows reposrtedly are creating strong noise and humidity around the waterfall
- and several blocks of flats are very near to the waterfall.
Old photograph shows Narva waterfall before building of dam. In background there is seen Krenholm manufacture (22 kB)
